Got my first push notifications on #SimpleX
Got my first push notifications on #SimpleX
Have to say that having a ntfy server with proper networking (looking at you, Oracle free tier) and going all in on UnifiedPush has done wonders for mobile phone battery life.
After switching to Molly+MollySocket, I could probably go two days again, opposed to the battery warning on the first evening a couple weeks ago.
Without Mastodon and Lemmy, probably 3 days without a stretch. I still wonder if this Pixel 7a battery will last the full OS support period, new it was 20% / day with doomscrolling.

ARRRRRRGH!!!!
Have to use Reddit on a degoogled phone?
You can now get push notifications using Reddit's webapp over @unifiedpush in browsers that support it. (IronFox and soon Fennec)
#Reddit #deGoogle #UnifiedPush
Here's the thing. I don't even begrudge Nextcloud posting videos to YouTube. The part I have a problem with is that they say they're promoting decentralization, yet after all these years they refuse to post to any alternative.
Similarly, they provide no option to use @unifiedpush , but *only* allow Googles Firebase for notifications.
Using Google trackers on the website is pretty ridiculous though when such high quality alternatives exist, such as @Matomo .
They also never bother to explain WHY they continue to ignore all of these things that so obviously go against the values they supposedly stand for, Just crickets to any questions and more promotional videos / blog posts.
@Discourse, the popular forum solution? It works too!

I'm disappointed that @brave hasn't expressed support for #UnifiedPush. It's sad to see a browser that supposedly supports #privacy still relying on #Google and #Apple Services for Push Notifications.
Any chance this is already on the roadmap @BrendanEich?
As expected UnifiedPush works with Masotodon (v4.4.0+) web app!
#IronFox v140.0.4 has been released, and the Firefox-based web browser for Android now officially supports UnifiedPush

Please . I'm going to stop short of saying you should not install the #ICEBlock app, but you should know that you're painting a giant target on your back if you use it, and it does not protect your information adequately. The Trump administration is not being coy about how they see this app and it's users, citing charges of obstruction of justice and general threats of prosecution.
The developer ignorantly insists the only way to safely use it is through iOS app store. That ignores the fact that Apple collects data on what users are installing what apps. It also ignores that the gov has been intercepting push notifications for several years now, so it would be as simple as comparing that data against those who receive push notifications at specific times to determine who is using the app.
The app is also closed-source, so the community cannot inspect it for vulnerabilities.
If they distributed through a 3rd party app store on Android, such as #fdroid (which you cannot do on iOS), they could allow users to run their own notification system using #unifiedpush. Google would not be involved at any stage.
Yes, this would be a high barrier to entry for use, but I think the usecase demands it. Almost certainly we will soon see prosecution for the apps' users and probably also removal from the App Store. Apple most certainly does not care enough to fight the government over this.
That is, unless, as I suspect, this app is actually a #honeypot.

Good news! Next release of Fennec browser will support UnifiedPush. And IronFox plan to do it as well!
You'll be able to receive push notifications for many more apps if you're not using Play services, thanks to web apps.
Please interact with this post to test #UnifiedPush on #fairphone
@delta @kassner so sad there's still no #UnifiedPush implementation for the degoogled androids and Linux phones.

@DoKo @moshidon Setting up #UnifiedPush today has almost driven me insane. Tried different distributors, different #ntfy servers, not even the UP test app was triggering notifications despite registering successfully (as all other apps did). Then I switched to the official ntfy server and most apps started working but #ElementX based #Matrix clients did not. Then I read about this issue: https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-android/issues/3031
And after a while they just started working too... but not the original Element client.
