@hakki @Codeberg @forgejo @mgorny
Concerning other projects less known than kernel I would have to talk with each contributor to find his motivation (and with all due respect, I know too little about Codeberg … we still stick with #Gitea https://github.com/openSUSE/openSUSE-git/issues/36). It could be very interesting to ask.
I don't add my hacky infosec scripts on #github. I use a self-hosted #gitea
I never experienced any issues with deletion, but some people have. It's always dangerous, and misunderstandings are pre-programmed. Vuln research or malware tests don't belong to 3rd-party systems, which are frequented by the masses.
Gitea has:
1. Actions https://docs.gitea.com/usage/actions/overview
2. A simple Docker container install
3. A fast web interface
4. It needs very little ressources
5. I can host it privately and hardcode all my credentials. :p
Thinking back, I used to run GitLab. It was a horror. GitLab updates are messed up, and the whole system is convoluted.
I finally enabled #Cloudflare proxy for https://git.nicelycomposed.codes
The reason it was disabled was a large file upload limitation on Cloudflare's free tier. I was not able to push large #Docker images to the registry on #Gitea instance.
Now I have a local #DNS record for the Gitea instance pointing directly to the #Zoraxy reverse proxy by its local IP address. So, when my CI jobs push images, the data bypasses Cloudflare's proxy with its limitations.
AI crawlers, on the other hand, are blocked by Cloudflare.
My #Proxmox node should become cooler now.
And yes, whoever uses #discord for #documentation and #versioning instead of a goddam #git [doesn't have to be @github / #GitHub or @gitlab / #GitLab or @Codeberg / #Codeberg or even @gitea / #Gitea - just use any git
and write down your documentation in a useable format like #Markdown or goddamn ASCII plain text FFS] should be banned for life from #coding, working in #IT or contribute to #FLOSS.
We’re excited to announce the release of Gitea v1.24.3!
This update includes numerous bug fixes and important security improvements. We strongly recommend all users upgrade as soon as possible to ensure stability and protection.

#Gitea #Git #OpenSource
Just discovered #Gitea — a lightweight Git server written in Golang. It runs beautifully on my Raspberry Pi 3B, which had been collecting dust in a drawer. Perfect for my personal projects! https://about.gitea.com
Hi, I set up an Gitea server on my servers in the EU powered by my own solar power and I want to share it with you. You can upload your repository there or mirror it or help me to mirror major repos there. Feel free to use it as well for your projects.
On today's edition of #selfhosting #homelab , I installed #KitchenOwl to my server to replace the ad-infested cozi app my partner and I use for a synchronised grocery and recipe list app.
I also noticed that in the year or two I've been running this homelab, both #k3s and many of my docker images are getting dated.
Surprisingly, updating k3s was extremely seamless (especially since I documented the flags I used on install)
I then installed #renovate to go through my #gitea server and open PRs that notify me of docker image (bonus: and nuget package!) Updates on a cron job.
@eclecticpassions why not self hosted #gitea?
Finally concluded the switch to Forgejo on my private git instance !
It was easier than expected, given this wonderful downgrading file for Gitea

Now onto the Forgejo adventure, and trying to enable the federation feature !
I'm currently working on a #wordle clone to learn how to build graphical interfaces in #python
The repository is hosted on #gitea
https://gitea.com/MrHCJ/custom-wordle
Wow ok, done
That was so easy
Kudos to this blog post for the amazing tutorial : https://xeiaso.net/blog/2025/anubis/
Managed to also quickly add a grafana dashboard to reflect some metrics, and those numbers give some perspective to the insane spam all the internet is under, just to generate more slop
Ok, time to deploy Anubis in front of Gitea, I'm done with those FAANG oligarchs scraping my repos 24/7 to check if anything changed...
F*ck off.
But that also means Gitea might get unstable for some time, woops

If you see the cute furry, it worked
@j12t Despite its past friendliness to the open-source community, I’ve been hearing that #gitlab now has a stronger commercial focus.
While #activiypub doesn’t align with that revenue growth, AI integration does:
https://about.gitlab.com/direction/ai-powered/ai_framework/
At #fosdem 2025, I heard many communities appreciate #forgejo and #codeberg as embodying what the open-source world had hoped to get from #gitlab and #gitea.
As far as I know, #forgejo is committed to implementing federation, which is already a feature in development:
